When we started Contrapositive in 2000 there weren’t a lot of digital agencies that had the strengths of a video production company and a web design agency. We founded with both disciplines because we knew that the future home of video was the web.

The internet was slooooow back then with broadband only just coming through but we knew that technology would catch up and eventually websites would have tons of video content. And we were right – YouTube predicts that very soon 90% of all internet traffic will be video. This isn’t all dancing cat films; there are plenty of businesses benefiting from creating video content. How can video benefit your organisation? Put simply video makes it more likely a visitor to your site will become a customer (or a donor or a fan or whatever).


Firstly, video content is more engaging than written content because human beings are better at consuming audio visual communication as opposed to written content. As a species we’ve been watching, speaking and listening longer than we’ve been reading.

Secondly a video communicates emotions. We pick up subtle body language signs when someone speaks, we respond to animation and movement and music stirs up emotion. All this means that videos increase visitor trust and makes them more likely to convert from a “visitor” into a “customer”.

The retail website “Internet Retailer” reported in April that in a recent survey that “52% of consumers who watch product videos say those videos make them more confident about purchases” and they found a retailer who reported that visitors were 144% more likely to purchase if there was a video.
